Look Better in the Buff in 14 Days!
|
Clear from Head to Toe You're not the only one. Many
adult women suffer from body acne. To get your skin clear in time for a big date, swear off the spandex at the gym, which
traps sweat next to skin, and wear looser-fitting clothing. Also, wash with a salicylic acid-based cleanser, like Neutrogena
Body Clear ($6.44), all over, especially on areas prone to breakouts.
Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate Drinks lots of water --
at least eight glasses a day -- to keep skin soft and clear. Try drinking one or two glasses of water with every meal or snack,
and keep a large bottle on your desk at work. Staying hydrated will also help you feel more full -- which could help you slim
down.
Firm Up Most experts agree that cellulite creams
cannot permanently get rid of that dimpled skin 85 percent of us have. But some say they can make skin appear tighter in the
short term with continued use. Clarins Body Lift Advanced Cellulite Control ($52.50) is a favorite among beauty junkies.
Rev Up Your Workouts If you don't already have an
exercise routine, looking better naked should be just the motivation you need to start one. Cardiovascular exercise is essential,
so commit to doing 20 to 30 minutes each day, three to five days each week. Add some strength training to the equation, too.
Since you've only got two weeks, you may want to focus on one body part -- your arms, tummy, or glutes for example. Pick two
or three exercises and dedicate yourself to doing three sets of each exercise every time you work out. How many repetitions
you do and how much weight you lift should depend on your tolerance -- don't push yourself too hard. Remember the idea is
to slowly build your strength, not force it to magically appear.
You Are What You Eat It's annoying but true, so stop
with the doughnuts and coffee already! Studies have shown that good nutrition contributes as much to your mood as it does
to your weight, so for these two weeks (at least) drop your junk food habit.
Take Care of Your Teeth Who's gonna wanna see you
in the buff if they can smell your breath a mile away? Start a nightly dental regimen -- brush, floss, and use the strongest
mouthwash you can stand. You might consider investing in an at-home teeth-whitening program, too. Most teeth-whitening programs
last 14 days or less. These little details will go a long way toward creating a sexier smile.
Take Time for Yourself Stress shows on your face
and in your body, so it's essential to find some relaxation time each day. Yoga is an excellent stress-reliever, not to mention
wonderful exercise. So buy a video that you can follow in your home. Put on some comfy and loose-fitting clothes, hide away
in a room of your own, light a scented candle, and relax as you settle in to the video. Follow the routine with a cup of green
tea. The antioxidants are good for you, and the ritual of enjoying the tea will allow you to stay in your meditative yoga
state for that much longer. |
|
Load Up on Fruits and Vegetables Start eating fruits
and vegetables like they're going out of style, especially juicy citrus fruits. Grapefruit and grapefruit juice contain lots
of antioxidants to keep your skin looking bright and healthy. Apples, dried apricots, cherries, grapes, kiwi, oranges, mango,
melon, and raspberries are all excellent additions to your diet. Don't foget your veggies -- cucumbers, tomatoes, sweet peppers,
and carrots offer super antioxidant properties, too. Oatmeal is an excellent breakfast solution. Rolled oats are quite filling
despite being low in calories. Fish like salmon and herring have essential oils that make your skin and hair healthier. |
|
Foods to Avoid Take it easy on the salt. It will
leave you and your skin feeling thirsty, and can make you feel bloated. This means watching your cheese intake, along with
foods like pepperoni, bacon, and pork. Milk contributes to that bloated feeling too, so you may want to avoid it for a few
days. Garlic is a no-no, especially the day or two before your big romantic event, as it will linger on your breath and in
your pores. Sugar is another culprit to avoid because it produces a natural high, which also means there's a natural low.
This is when you're at your most vulnerable to overeating. Finally, try to stay away from refined starches like cakes, biscuits,
rolls, and soft white bread -- these foods will quickly turn to sugar in your body.
Don't Get Your Drink On Alcohol is a major source
of calories -- one glass of red wine has almost 100 calories, and beer is even worse. So reduce your alcohol intake, if not
cut it out altogether. This is not to say you can't celebrate on the big day with a glass of champagne, but do take it easy. |
|
Fuzz-Free Want to be silky smooth all over? Spring
for a wax -- be it bikini, leg, or upper lip. Waxing does cause temporary irritation, however. So get it done at least three
days before the big day, giving your skin time to recover, and take an aspirin beforehand to help ease the pain.
|
Sun-Kissed in Winter A tan makes anyone look thinner.
Get a subtle bronze even in the dead of winter with self-tanner, which you should apply a few days before the big day just
in case you need to do touch-ups. Try the popular Lancome Flash Bronzer ($26.50), and use this method for goof-proof application:
Exfoliate in the shower, paying special attention to elbows, knees, and feet. Once you are thoroughly dried off, apply moisturizer,
and let it sink in for a few moments. Then apply the tanner in long strokes, being sure to hit your feet too. Blend well.
If you're doing your back, get a friend to help! When you're finished, scrub hands and nails clean, and give the tanner about
15 minutes to dry.
|
Carbo-Load This old runner's trick works. You'll
want lots of energy for your big night out, so have yourself a nice pasta dinner the day before. Avoid the garlic and instead
have your favorite vegetables and skip the dessert! You can indulge in some sweets with your sweetie on the big date.
Sweet Dreams Get a good night's sleep. This is the
best thing you can do for your body and your state of mind. If you have trouble getting to sleep, avoid drinking any caffeine
after noon. Start your bedtime regimen early. Put on a pot of decaf tea, like chamomile, and relax in your jammies with some
light reading material and soothing music.
|
Walk It Off Looking good is a state of mind -- and
fitness begets confidence. Start your day off right with a brisk 15-minute walk. The fresh air will clear your mind and the
activity will help you release some of that nervous energy.
Touchable Skin Sloughing off dead, dry skin can give
you baby-soft skin. Exfoliate with a shower scrub, like Fresh's Brown Sugar Body Polish ($58). It's pricey, but leaves your
skin super silky and smelling sweet. Another good -- and less expensive -- option is Origins Incredible Spreadable Scrub ($25).
You Glow, Girl! Although body glitter is a bit passe,
you can give your skin a gentle radiance by using a lotion infused with a hint of shimmer. After showering, rub Nivea Silky
Shimmer Lotion ($7.40) onto your body, being sure to hit shoulders and decolletage.
Pretty Hands and Feet Pamper your hands and feet
by getting a manicure and pedicure. A fire-engine red hue looks especially flirty for Valentine's Day. Don't want to spring
for a salon job? Give yourself this simple home version: Soak nails in warm, soapy water. File nails to just past the tips
of your fingers. Drop cuticle oil on each finger, then rub in. Gently push back cuticles. Finish it off by buffing nails until
they shine.
Pump It Up! Here's a trick men have been using for
ages -- last-minute push-ups. Just before your date, do three sets of push-ups and three sets of sit-ups. Add some bicep curls
or whatever type of exercise you're comfortable with. This flurry of activity will give your cheeks that sexy rosy glow. Plus
your muscles will appear larger for at least an hour or two.
The Right Light Still not feeling confident about
showing some skin? Try the oldest trick in the book: good old-fashioned candlelight. It flatters everyone, and creates a romantic
mood to boot!

Tips to Help Slow Down Aging
10 Tips to Help Slow Down Aging
The following
is a simple guideline of quick tips on how to help slow down your body's natural aging process:
1. Eat lots of
fruits and vegetables. These have very important vitamins and phytonutrients, including extremely beneficial antioxidants.
The RDA is six servings.
2. Limit sweets. This one is obvious, for all areas of a healthy life.
3. Load
up on garlic. Garlic has long been known to have positive effects on he body.
4. Eat only lean cuts of meat and
extremely limit your consumption of red meats.
5. Choose fish. Fish and other seafood are much better for you
than most meat choices. Plus, "fatty" fishes, like tuna, salmon, mackerel, sardines and herring are rich in essential
omega-3 fatty acids.
6. Eat soy products. Soybean foods are an excellent source of lean protein.
7. Drink
tea. Tea has been known to have antioxidant qualities.
8. Avoid bad fats, like those found in many meat and dairy
products and also in sweets. Limit fat for cooking and use only light oils and margarines.
9. Severely limit
or eliminate alcohol consumption altogether.
10. Don't overload your body with unnecessary calories. You probably
need less than you think you do.

The Truth About Cellulite
It
is an ugly fact of life for 90 percent of women: Cellulite, those unsightly fatty deposits also known as orange-peel skin.
More than just ordinary fat, cellulite is a specific combination of fat, waste, and water that forms a bumpy, rippled mass
that gets trapped in the fibrous, connective tissue just below the skin's surface. Cellulite appears most commonly on the
hips, thighs, and buttocks, but it can show up on the arms, abdomen, and upper back as well.
What Causes Cellulite?
Several factors contribute to cellulite, including diet as well as
a sluggish blood and lymphatic circulation, which allows wastes to accumulate. But three contributing agents determine whether
you develop cellulite: heredity, estrogen, and fat. If just one of those ingredients is missing, you don't have cellulite,
just plain ordinary fat.
You usually inherit cellulite, that is, if your mom has it --
and by "it" we mean loose connective tissue, which fat globules pop up through -- chances are you do or will
too, even if you're thin. As connective tissue weakens with age, the dimpling becomes even more pronounced. If you have thin
skin, which is also hereditary, cellulite is even easier to see than it is on thicker skin. If your mother has cellulite,
you've probably inherited her loosely woven connective tissue and poor lymphatic drainage, which leads to bunched-up fat cells.
And as you now know, cellulite is more than just fat: It's fat trapped by a network of connective tissue fibers. If the underlying
network is loosely woven, the fat bulges through the fibers, causing a "cottage cheese" effect on the skin. As connective
tissue weakens with age, the dimpling becomes even more pronounced.
The fibers that extend from the muscle up through the fat and connect
to the undersurface of the skin run directly up and down, perpendicularly, at a 90-degree angle, which allows bulging and
puckering. In men, the fibers I mentioned run in a crisscross, at a 45-degree angle, so the fat is less likely to bulge up
like it does in women.
The Estrogen Factor
Once women reach puberty, the body's ovaries begin to produce
the hormone estrogen, which helps to store fat in the hips, thighs, and buttocks, in preparation for childbearing. We can
also thank estrogen for adding to cellulite's puckered appearance: It makes fat cells sticky, so they bunch together like
grapes, contributing to the appearance of cellulite.
Can Dieting Eliminate
Cellulite?
|
Diet plays only a small role in curbing cellulite, because cellulite
is basically a genetic, hormonal, and anatomic problem. Dieting can help, especially if you are overweight, but it definitely
won't totally solve the problem. In fact, some anorexic women have cellulite. Some overweight women don't show it at all.
Danielle M. Schupp, a registered dietitian and sports nutritionist
at Reebok Sports Club, New York, New York, who also owns a private consulting practice, recommends that you exercise regularly
and eat a low-fat diet in which 20 to 25 percent of your daily intake of calories comes from fat. The example below can serve
as a quick guide. You should also realize that individual servings and calorie intake will vary. A registered dietitian can
provide you with a customized diet based on your individual weight goals and level of physical activity.
Sample 1500 Calorie Plan
Breakfast: 1 cup whole grain cereal (5 grams of fiber per serving) with
1 cup skim or low-fat soy milk 1 Tbs. crushed nuts 1 small banana
Lunch: 3 ounces turkey on two
slices whole grain bread with lettuce and tomato and mustard or low-fat mayonnaise Salad (include red, green, yellow vegetables)
with 2 Tbs. vinaigrette dressing
Snack: 1 cup nonfat yogurt 1 cup cantaloupe
Dinner:
4 ounces grilled fish, chicken, or lean red meat 1 small baked sweet potato with one tsp. whipped butter 1 cup steamed
broccoli
Snack: 1 glass skim milk 1 apple
Serving Guide: 80-100 Calories per Serving Corn
and peas: 1/2 cup Yam and potato: 1 small potato (3 oz.) 1/2 bagel: 2 oz. Pasta/grains/rice: 1/2 cup Pretzels:
3/4 ounce
A diet high in insoluble fiber (wheat bran, fruits, veggies) and with plenty of water and accompanied by
lots of physical activity is the best way to achieve a "clean" system. Green tea also can help clean out your system. Remember,
when you reduce the amount of fat in your diet, you reduce the amount of calories you consume. For instance, there are only
four calories per gram of carbohydrates and protein, but there are nine calories per gram of fat. So, for every gram of fat
you eliminate from your diet, you get double the benefit in terms of weight loss that you would get for every gram of protein
or carbohydrates that you eliminate from your diet. But, do not eat less than 20 percent of your calories from fat.
 | Cellulite Treatment that Don't Work
Creams and Potions
Cellulite is a three-dimensional problem that involves the
entire fatty layer and extends all the way from under the surface of the skin down to the muscle. Consequently, topically
applied creams have little chance of success at busting cellulite. No cream applied to the skin's surface can penetrate completely
through the skin, cause the fat cells to detach from each other, improve the lymphatic circulation, and reduce the skin's
swelling. If applying lotion seems to bring any improvement at all, it's probably due to massaging or rubbing in the cream,
which can lessen the swelling and improve the lymphatic drainage in the area. However, whatever minor, and temporary, improvement
you might gain has nothing to do with the active ingredient in the cream, which does nothing at all to cellulite.
Ultrasound
Ultrasound is an interesting concept for combating cellulite.
Unfortunately, no benefit in terms of reducing or eliminating or in any way changing the composition of cellulite has ever
been derived from zapping it with ultrasound.
Liposuction
Contrary to popular belief, cellulite is not an indication
for liposuction. Liposuction is terrific for removing excess deposits of fat or bulges (places where fat cells clump together).
That's why it's perfect for love handles, bulges at the thighs, abdomen, hips, upper arms, and other such fat deposits. So,
if you need to debulk unwanted fat cells, lipo works. However, if you have a good silhouette (no obvious bumps or lumps) when
wearing leggings and a bodysuit, but you still have cellulite, then liposuction won't get rid of the ripples and dimples.
Bottom line: Liposuction can remove excess
fat cells, but it cannot affect how they organize themselves or their general structure.
The Newest Discovery: Cellasene
Again, put your money back in your pocket and don't waste
it on Cellasene, the expensive new herbal anticellulite product from Italy. This is merely a magical-sounding mixture of common
supplements, which are touted by the product's manufacturer to increase blood circulation, reduce fluid buildup, and stimulate
metabolism. None of the cited studies have been peer-reviewed, and the studies lacked proper controls. Cellasene seems to
contain nothing more than several herbs that have no effect on the biology of the human body.
Bottom line: Save your money. | Cellulite Treatments
that Can Work
Because cellulite is a three-dimensional problem under the skin all
the way down to the muscle, and because it has to do with fat cells swelling up and sticking and bunching together, no topical
cream is likely to have much effect. Therefore, the only treatment options with any chance of success are those that involve
manipulation of the full thickness of the fatty layer.
Deep Tissue Massage
Currently, the only treatment available that has been shown to offer
any benefit at all for cellulite is deep tissue massage. This procedure goes by several trade names, including Endermologie,
by LPG, and Silhouette, by Luxar. This course of therapy consists of a series of treatments, usually two treatments a week,
each lasting about 35 minutes, for 8 to 10 weeks.
How It Works: A physician or a physician's assistant
moves a machine, basically a vacuum with two rollers attached to the end of a hose, across the cellulite-plagued area. The
suction action of the machine results in a very deep massage. Supposedly, as the machine massages, the motion "wrings" the
extra fluid out of the swollen fat cells and out from between the cells, in the process improving the lymphatic drainage.
The effect is to convert the fat from a group of clumped-up, swollen grapes to rows of eggs all neatly stacked in a row, letting
the skin lie smoothly on top. In theory, this sounds wonderful. In real life, the results can vary from modest to rather impressive.
Cost: $100 a session; a minimum of 14 sessions performed
twice a week for several weeks are recommended.
Drawback: The improvement is temporary. If you decide
to undergo the deep massage process, you must commit to a long treatment time (at least 14 treatments).
Exercise
One way to specifically target the fat under the loose skin is to
firm up the muscle under the skin, which will make the skin look tighter and smoother. Fitness expert Joyce L. Vedral, Ph.D.,
in her cellulite-fighting book Bottoms Up! (Warner), uses super sets, doing two exercises one after another quickly,
with each exercise hitting a different muscle group, which allows one set of muscles to relax while another set is being worked
to exhaustion. This helps to build tone and muscle, which smooths out the appearance of cellulite and makes the skin look
firmer. An added benefit of exercise: It helps get your circulation going.
However, because of the swelling of the fat cells and the matrix
of the connecting fibrous bands, exercise alone won't solve the problem. I see many patients who are in excellent shape and
condition, including professional athletes, who suffer from cellulite. Others are couch potatoes and have no cellulite. Go
figure.
Tanning

Tanning the area where you have cellulite can make it appear less
noticeable. However, the sun causes collagen in the skin to stretch and change, which can actually magnify the look of cellulite.
So, nix the sun. A better bet is to apply a self-tanning product (Try either Neutrogena Sunless Tanning Spray or Physicians
Formula Sunless Tanning Lotion.) To self-tan: First, gently rub an exfoliating cream onto the area to rid it of all dead skin
cells. Rinse it off in the shower, and dry thoroughly with a towel. Next, apply the self-tanner, using a circular upward motion.
Lie on your stomach on a towel as the cream dries.
Remember There is No Reason Not To Exercise!

| You'll Find at Angels |
Bed, Baths, and the Beyond Treat yourself to the ritual steam baths of Mexico's
Oaxaca and Puerto Escondido, but go easy on the "enriched" water you sprinkle on the stones.
|
How is a Mexican sweat bath—a temazcal—different from all other
sweat baths? For one thing, you usually don't get your fortune told before stepping into a Swedish sauna.
Virginia and I had no idea what was in store when we scheduled a traditional temazcal
session at La Casa de Maria (http://oaxacalive.com/mariaing.htm), the charming Oaxaca bed and breakfast where we were spending the Christmas holidays. A small,
white, oven-like structure on a big green lawn, Maria Diaz's temazcal was lavishly illustrated with Aztec images
suggesting big science. Maria explained that the temazcal—the name derives from the Nahuatl words temas
and calli, meaning "bath" and "house"—is a pre-Hispanic form of therapy rooted in Aztec culture, and was to
be regarded with the utmost respect.
We were attended to by a husband and wife of Indian descent clothed in white robes. After speaking
a few words in Nahuatl and scattering flowers about us, the woman lightly passed raw eggs over each of our bodies, then cracked
each egg into a glass of water, the contents of which her husband then analyzed. My wife's eyesight was poor, he declared.
No surprise there; she wears thick glasses. But he warned me of friends who were working against my interests. Yikes!
Fortunately, the double-team massage that followed quickly allayed my newfound paranoia.
The small, low entrance to the temazcal symbolizes reentry into the womb. The sweat-bath
goddess is Temazcaltoci, "grandmother of the baths" and a manifestation of Teteoinan, the goddess of medicine and mother of
all Aztec divinities. Inside the temazcal, we were seated on short benches and given a wooden bowl of water mixed
with herbs—probably a combination of eucalyptus, mugwort, rosemary, and other plants—which we were directed to
sprinkle judiciously on the hot stones on the floor. Dissatisfied with the steam generated by a few drops, and then a few
more, Virginia impatiently splashed the bowl's entire contents on the rocks. Our heads filled with visions of the jungle as
we entered a heat-induced swoon. Emerging from the temazcal a short while later, after being awakened by our concerned
caretakers, we realized we'd experienced too much of a great thing.
The drive from Oaxaca City to Puerto Escondido, the mellow Pacific Coast beach town where we
enjoyed our second temazcal, is as jaw-droppingly scenic as it is treacherous. The climate changes drastically from
desert to temperate to tropical as cars, trucks, and buses narrowly avoid crashing into one another on the road's countless
blind curves. Sweet relief it was to cruise past Puerto Escondido's world-class surfing beach 11 hours after saying adios
to Oaxaca City.
The "espacio meditativo" known as Temazcalli (www.temazcalli.com) is located up a mile-long dirt road on the far outskirts of Puerto Escondido. A tranquil, flower-bedecked
complex of rustic wood structures surrounding a round pool, Temazcalli offers a simpler, less ritualized variety of temazcal.
Following our separate massages, Virginia and I met in a taller, narrower steam bath integrated into a hillside structure.
Again we were given enriched water to sprinkle on heated stones. This time, though, the temazcal worked its magic
on us in a more relaxing, less hallucinatory fashion. But I did miss hearing about the goings-on behind my back. |
